We are delighted to be able to offer comprehensive driver training in off-road driving, trailer towing, winch operation, and ATVs.

Whether you’re looking to gain confidence in towing before you take the caravan away this year, or you’re a horse rider in need of your B+E licence to tow a horsebox, or if you’re simply an employer whose staff need to be able to navigate difficult terrain as part of their job, then we have the course for you.

Our training courses are built with your needs in mind, all of our courses – from B+E Trailer Training to Off-Road Driving – are designed to provide you with all the skills and confidence you need to drive safely.

Off-Road Training

Basic Level Off Road Driving & Safety Awareness

Mild slopes, around 15 degree with run out areas and reasonable traction (units 1 – 7)
A standard for private and commercial drivers who use 4x4s regularly but only drive in mild off-highway conditions which may only give reasonable traction such as mud, grass, gravel, snow & ice.
The Basic Level (units 1 – 7) is a half day course at 2 – 1 ratio or full day at 3 – 1 ratio.

Standard Level Off Road Driving & Safety Awareness

Moderate slopes, around 25 degrees with run out areas and reasonable traction (units 1 – 11)
A standard for private and commercial drivers who may use 4×4’s in off-highway areas of moderate difficulty.
The Standard Level will include units 1 – 7 of the Basic Level
The Standard level (units 1 – 12) is a one day course at a maximum ratio of 2 – 1

Higher Level Off Road Driving & Safety Awareness

Steep slopes above 25 degrees with run out areas, may be low traction (units 1 – 18)
A standard for operators working in unknown conditions and likely to encounter situations that require a high level of training and skill. This level confirms competence at the standard level then extends the drivers skill to cope with situations up to the vehicles capabilities. It also trains drivers to assess and recognise situations beyond the vehicles limits which must be avoided.
The Higher Level will include units 1 – 12 of the Basic & Standard Levels
The Higher Level (units 1 – 20) is a two day course at a maximum ratio of 3 – 1

B&E Trailer Training

B&E Preparatory - 1 Day Course

This 1 day course is ideal for those who already have a good level of experience with towing and reversing a trailer. Designed to provide the already confident driver with the skills and information required to pass the B+E trailer test, this course is intensive and informative.

Training is on a 1:1 basis. This allows for sufficient practical training time to ensure you are fully prepared for your B+E test.

B&E Preparatory - 2 Day Course

Suitable for those who have little to no experience with towing or trailers and those who feel they would like or require additional practice time and training to get to B+E pass standards.

Course duration: 12 hours training time (each training day includes 1 hour lunch break)

Half Day refresher Course

This course is ideal for those who have already obtained their B+E licence and would like a refresher/reminder of techniques and advice.

1 Day Refresher Course

This course is ideal for those who already have their B+E licence due to passing their test prior to January 1997 but have little to no experience towing.

ATV Training

ATV Training Basic

ATV sit astride/in Training.

Standard for training ATV operators

The objective is to equip drivers/riders with the very latest skills and knowledge to operate an ATV in off-highway conditions for work and private use.

  • Basic, Standard, Higher & Loads & Implements Is the Association’s minimum recommended standard for operating an ATV under daylight conditions and may require further training for specific conditions, machines, and equipment.
  • Requires continuous close supervision from an  Accredited Trainer
  • Recommended Training Ratios

2:1 ratio with 1 or 2 machines
4:1 ratio with a minimum of 2 machines

We recognise 4 levels of ATV Training

  • Basic Level
  • Standard Level
  • Higher level

Basic Level: For operating ATV’s on mild gradients with reasonable traction.

Basic Level must be completed prior attempting the Standard Level.

ATV Implement Training

ATV sit astride/sit in Loads and Implements.

  • For operating ATV’s with loads and towing equipment.
    Can be added to any level , course duration around half day.
  • Recommended maximum gradients to operate an un loaded ATV assuming reasonable grip and run out areas: Straight ascent / descent 30 degrees. Side slope 20 degrees: SUBJECT to manufacturers limits of operation
  • Always refer to manufacturers handbook for specific operational limits.

Winch Training

Winch Training

Vehicle Mounted Winches

Training winch operators

The objective is to equip drivers / riders with the very latest skills and knowledge to operate a vehicle mounted winch in off highway situations for work and private use.

  • Is the Associations minimum recommended standard for the basic operation of a Vehicle Mounted Winch and may require further training for specific conditions, machines and equipment.
  • Requires continuous close supervision from a Specialist Trainer (winching)
  • Assumes appropriate driver competence for vehicle and conditions, Standard level course recommended as pre-requisite for winch training.
  • Recommended Training Ratios Minimum 2:1 ratio Maximum 6:1 ratio
  • Course Duration Between half & one day depending on training ratios
  • The most commonly used winches are operated electrically from the vehicle’s battery supply, however there are shaft and hydraulically driven winches, all of which have different load ratings.
  • Identifying the winch type & load rating and checking that it is fitted safely with appropriate remote cut-outs.
  • Identifying the maximum ratings of all equipment used and operating within the design limits.
  • All equipment must be in a safe maintained condition as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Ensuring the equipment is in a safe maintained condition before use.
